Abstract

GARCIA CORREA, Martina Eva. BUILD A POSSIBLE AND TRANSFORMING MEMORY. LA TABLADA, A SITE OF MEMORY ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF MONTEVIDEO. Folia [online]. 2022, n.45, pp.199-228. ISSN 0325-8238.  http://dx.doi.org/10.30972/fhn.0456305.

A good part of the studies on Memory Sites in Argentina and the Southern Cone have focused on the administration and exposure of public memories on State Terrorism and its inscription in space, under a relatively rigid and homogeneous interpretive framework. This framework is being called into question, with increasing intensity, by a series of complexities that go beyond and challenge the meanings and assumptions associated with these spaces. The La Tablada Memory Site, located on the northwest outskirts of the City of Montevideo (Uruguay), on the current border between rural and urban areas, presents a diversity of layers of violence that configure it as a historical and multiple territory. The confluence of actors involved points to the need to build a non-moralizing memory that does not obliterate the rest of the injustices that are condensed in this space. From the ethnographic analysis developed around the construction process of this Memory Site, we will address the challenges involved in the production of transformative memories, capable of reconstructing the present and the future in a local key. To do this, we analyze some ethnographic situations in which the legal mechanism of judicial precaution appears as a plastic and political figure, mediating the relationships between different actors.
