Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present the first archaeobotanical results obtained from the analysis of plant microremains (phytoliths and starch grains) adhered to ceramic fragments from the archaeological site Isla Orihuela Costa Sudeste (487±45 14 C years BP), located on the homonymous island, Mar Chiquita lagoon, province of Córdoba. This type of analysis, (which, until now, was not yet applied to the area), provides evidence on the processing and selection of various plants by the human groups who inhabited the area during the late Holocene. The results obtained indicate the presence of phytolytic assemblages composed mainly by the Panicoideas, Chloridoideas, and Danthoniodeas sub-families, as well as starchy elements of diverse morphology. The elements found suggest the presence of both wild (Prosopis sp., Geoffroea decorticans) and cultivated (Zea mays) plants in the analyzed pots.
