Abstract

ROBERTO SODRE, Paulo. Entre a guarda e o viço: a madre nas cantigas de amigo galego-portuguesas. Temas Mediev. [online]. 2004, vol.12, pp.97-128. ISSN 0327-5094.

After Alfred Jeanroy stated at the end of the nineteenth century that the role of the mothers in the cantigas de amigo is mostly mute, several researchers have explored the possibility of refuting this idea. In 1934 Manuel Rodríguez Lapa was one of the first in observing that madres play the chief role in some of the cantigas. In Rip Cohen´s critical edition of the cantigas de amigo of 2003, not only the lover but also the mother are included among the speakers. The active role played by these character suggests mentalities and attitudes which have received only little attention from the specialists. This article analizes the representation of the mother figure in the cantigas de amigo by comparing it with medieval moral treatises and jurisprudence which determined the women´s accepted behavior throughout the Middle Ages.

Keywords : critique; Galicio-Portuguese troubadours; cantigas de amigo; mother.
