Abstract

BYOCK, Jesse l.. El orden gubernamental en la Islandia temprano medieval. Temas Mediev. [online]. 2008, vol.16. ISSN 0327-5094.

The purpose of this article is to describe the political system prevailing in Iceland during the commonwealth period. Special attention is given to the difference between the Icelandic and Norwegian societies, as most original settlers came to the island from Norway, so the degree of similarity and changes between both is particularly meaningful. In addition, key elements present in the insular society, like isolation from external threats, the thing  system or its lack of executive power are subjected to analysis in light of the negotiations, struggles and alliances between chieftains and farmers. The outcoming situation is a peculiar system of lateral  order based on groups of self-interest that lacks central and territorial authority.

Keywords : Government; Iceland; Chieftains; Farmers.
