Abstract
GOMEZ, Bibiana and MONTENEGRO, Olga. Abundance of collared peccary (Pécari tajacu) in two protected areas of the Colombian Guayana. Mastozool. neotrop. [online]. 2012, vol.19, n.2, pp.163-178. ISSN 0327-9383.
We estimated the abundance of collared peccary (Pecari tajacu) in two protected areas at the Colombian Guayana, the Tuparro Natural National Park (TNNP) and the Puinawai Natural National Reserve (PNNR). We recorded direct observations of animals as well as tracks along the same transects. We walked 203.6 km of trails within the TNNP and 238.5 km within the PNNR. Peccary abundance was low at both sites without significant differences between estimations: 0.24 individuals/km and 0.083 tracks/km in the TNNP, and, 0.05 individuals/km and 0.088 tracks/km in the PNNR. Low peccary abundance contrasts with higher abundances in other localities of the Neotropics.
