Abstract

GARCES-RESTREPO, Mario F  and  SAAVEDRA-RODRIGUEZ, Carlos A. Densidad de ardilla roja (Sciurus granatensis) en hábitats con diferentes coberturas vegetales en los Andes de Colombia. Mastozool. neotrop. [online]. 2013, vol.20, n.2, pp.381-386. ISSN 1666-0536.

We estimated the density of the red-tailed squirrel (Sciurus granatensis) in forested (relicts and natural regeneration areas) and non-forested (wooded pastures and alder plantations) habitats in two locations in the Andes of Colombia, using sampling distance methodology. The density ranged from 7.9 to 27.6 individuals/km2. Squirrel density did not differ among localities or habitats; however, highest density of Sciurus granatensis was recorded in wooded pastures. Apparently this is a plastic species that is favored by transformed habitats. The presence of Ceroxylon quindiense could be beneficial for the abundance of Sciurus granatensis in the central Andes of Colombia.

Keywords : Colombian Andes; Distance sampling; Population density; Red-tailed Squirrel.
