Abstract

ANGELETTI, Sabrina; CERVELLINI, Patricia M  and  MASSOLA, Victoria. New records of a stranding humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) in Argentine Sea and notes on its epibionts. Mastozool. neotrop. [online]. 2014, vol.21, n.2, pp.319-324. ISSN 0327-9383.

We analyzed the case of a young humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) which was stranded on Playa Baterías (38°58’60”S; 61°48’0”W), Buenos Aires province, Argentina. The animal was a juvenile male of 12 meters long and it is the first one found whole on the coast of southeast Buenos Aires. We took measures of the animal body and samples of epibionts. The records of humpback whales from Argentine Sea are scarce, which makes this case important to get material and information to increase our knowledge of strandings in our country.

Keywords : Argentina; Balaenopteridae; Buenos Aires; Coronula; Stranding.
