The text and the interpretation of some lines in Demosthenes' On the false embassy (19.94) has been discussed, particularly the expression τὴν πρώτην ἔφερον τοῦ φενακισμοῦ. In our opinion, the problem can be solved by understanding that in all the passage Demosthenes uses a sports metaphor that has to do with the λαμπαδηδρομίαι or torch relay races.
