ABSTRACT. Sigara (Tropocorixa) rubyi (Hungerford, 1928), previously known from Argentina and Uruguay, is recorded for the first time in Chile, in Valparaíso Region. The correct spelling of this species and Sigara (Tropocorixa) hosfordi (Hungerford, 1928) is commented.

Corixidae, commonly known as water boatmen, is a family of nepomorphan Heteroptera which has a complete aquatic life cycle (Hungerford, 1948). Corixids have a variety of feeding habits including carnivory, herbivory, scavengery, and omnivory (Melo, 2013). The cosmopolitan genus Sigara Fabricius, 1755 is one of the most diverse within the Corixidae, with nearly 70 species (Konopko, 2012). In South America, this genus is represented and distributed from the tropics to Patagonia (Hungerford, 1948; Melo, 2013).

Sigara (Tropocorixa) rubyi (Hungerford, 1928) was originally described from the locality of Mercedes in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the genus Arctocorisa Wallengren, 1894, and named after Ruby Hosford who collected the first specimens (Hungerford, 1928). Later it was recorded in Córdoba province and Uruguay by Jaczewski (1931, 1933), who transferred it to the genus Sigara Fabricius, 1775 and emended the name to S. rubyae. This was maintained in Hungerford (1948) where it was assigned to the subgenus Tropocorixa Hutchinson, 1940. Bachmann (1979, 1981) provides a distribution range which includes also part of the Argentinean provinces of Santa Cruz, Río Negro, Chubut, La Pampa, Santa Fe and Entre Ríos. He mentioned that the distribution might reach the province of Corrientes and South Brazil. Finally, Melo (2009) included several records from Argentina, reinforcing the distribution provided by previous authors. The purpose of this contribution is to provide the first records of this species from Chile.

Material examined. Chile, Valparaíso Province, Los Maitenes, Puchuncaví, 10.II.2018, Andrea Lemaitre leg. 1$1$ (in Juan F. Campodonico collection, Valdivia, Chile), Chile, Valparaíso Region, Papudo, 19-II-2012, J. Higueras leg. 2$ (in Instituto de la Patagonia collection, Punta Arenas, Chile).

Diagnosis. Head (Fig. 1a) with interocular space broader than the width of an eye. Pronotum (Fig. 1a) with apex angulate. Metaxyphus at base wider than long, rounded at apex. Claval pruinose area longer than postnodal pruinose area. Protibia (Fig. 1b) with carina. Tergite VI (Fig. 1c) with margin sinuous, medially notched and at right side angularly produced. Strigil (Fig. 1c) small and compact, with 5 combs. Sternites III to V with a dark macula. Tergite VII (Fig. 1c) with margin medially produced in an angular lobe; lobe with long setae and the apex slightly directed to the left. Right paramere (Fig. 1d) sinuous, with apex truncate (Hungeford, 1928, 1948; Bachmann, 1979, 1981).

Sigara (T.) rubyi shows a wide distribution range from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast, in a high diversity of environments (Melo, 2009). Therefore, its presence in Chile is not rare, and probably there may be other species known from Argentina that could be also present in Chile. It is worthy to mention that the record of S. (T) schadei (Hungerford, 1928) in Hungerford (1948) was considered doubtful by Bachmann (1979) who indicated this species is distributed essentially in both Chaco and Corrientes provinces. It resembles S. (T.) rubyi (S. (T) schadei was described first as a variation of this species) and could have been confused. It differs by having the apex of the right paramere hook-like (apex truncate as a rounded knob in S. (T) rubyi) and lack a dark macula in sternites III to V Campodonico, J.F. & Faúndez E.I. Nomenclatural note. The ñame of this species together with the Argentinean species Sigara (Tropocorixa) hosfordi (Hungerford, 1948) (which has the same nomenclatural history) were emended by Jaczewski (1933) to S. rubyae and S. hosfordae, respectively, as they were named after a female. These are amendments of incorrect latinizations, not included in the Art. 32.5 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN, 1999) for spellings that must be corrected. Thus, according the ICZN (1999) these are unjustified amendments and the correct names to be used are S. rubyi and S. hosfordi.
