Abstract

REYES, Francisco Jerónimo. De la velada de club a la estética de los cortejos: La construcción del 1° de Mayo socialista en la Argentina finisecular (1894-1900). Bol. Inst. Hist. Argent. Am. Dr. Emilio Ravignani [online]. 2016, n.44, pp.42-77. ISSN 0524-9767.

Public celebrations such as May Day are a key instance for dealing with the problem of the origin and evolution of modern political identities. This article aims to reconstruct a number of important dimensions of the construction of the "Party of the Proletariat" as political ritual par excellence of socialism, while it began to shape their party organization in the country in the decade of 1890. Taking into account the concerns of leaders and socialist publicists, the various forms of celebration and models that acted as sources, May Day is presented as a demonstration of the richness and complexity of this nascent political culture in the end of century Argentina.

Keywords : Socialist Party; Political rituals; May Day; Political cultures; Political identities.
