Abstract

AMGARTEN QUITZAU, Evelise  and  MORAES E SILVA, Marcelo. Entre las casas de comercio y el hipódromo: las carreras de caballo en Paysandú (Uruguay) en las primeras décadas del siglo XX. Bol. Inst. Hist. Argent. Am. Dr. Emilio Ravignani [online]. 2022, n.57, pp.67-85. ISSN 0524-9767.  http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.34096/bol.rav.n57.11492.

This paper aims to comprehend the place of horseracing in the city of Paysandú in the first decades of the twentieth century, known as Uruguay’s modernization period. In this city, whose economy was boosted by cattle raising and commercial exchanges generated by its harbor (the second greatest of the country in this period), horseracing represented one of the principal amusements. Horseracing was strongly related to great cattle raisers and happened simultaneously in two spaces: trade houses and the city’s racetrack, built at the end of the nineteenth century. Based on the sources, it can be noticed that, at first, trading houses did not represent direct competition to activities carried out in the racetrack. They even attracted the same horse owners who occupied positions in the board of directors of the racetrack. On the other hand, there is a perceptible decrease in the sociability related to the racetrack between 1905 and 1907, leading to an effort to reestablish the racetrack and turn it into the main stage for equestrian events in the city. To do so, they adopted an organization closer to sportized forms and demanded exclusivity in the organization of horseraces.
