Abstract

BARRAL, María Elena  and  ROCA, Facundo. La parroquia y el convento: jurisdicciones y recursos en disputa en el Buenos Aires rural tardocolonial. Bol. Inst. Hist. Argent. Am. Dr. Emilio Ravignani [online]. 2024, n.60, pp.32-56. ISSN 0524-9767.  http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.34096/bol.rav.n60.12825.

At the end of the 1790s, a long conflict confronted the priest of the parishes of Baradero and San Pedro (in the north of the Buenos Aires countryside) with the friars of the Recollect convent located in the latter town. The confrontation between the priest and the religious community –who disputed the economic resources of the parish, as well as certain prerogatives and jurisdictional privileges– allows us to address central aspects related to the construction of spatiality in this region of the diocese of Buenos Aires and how it modified the relations between the clergy themselves, as well as between them and their parishioners. Starting from this reduced scale of analysis, we explore the interaction between the different institutions and ecclesiastical agents of the region, giving an account of the dynamics, the displacements and the different roles played by them, as well as the disputes around the financing and the fund-raising. This exploration confirms the crucial role played by the regulars in the rural parishes of the diocese, while opening new questions regarding the definition of parish jurisdictions and the economic support of the clergy in late-colonial Buenos Aires.

Keywords : parishes; clergy; religious orders; Buenos Aires countryside; late colonial period.
