Abstract
PARNAS, Mariano Juan and FONZO BOLANEZ, Claudia Yésica. Does the queen share the throne?. Trab. soc. [online]. 2021, vol.22, n.36, pp.315-332. Epub Jan 01, 2021. ISSN 1514-6871.
In the dawn of the new millennium, Santiago del Estero has positioned itself as the main agricultural commodities producer outside of the Pampas region, with soybean taking on a hegemonic role. Therefore, various studies have sought to exhibit the social, economic, and environmental problems that have accompanied the proliferation of soybean crops. This article aims to analyze this process in Santiago del Estero during the 2015-2018 period. In the first place and through a documentary analysis, the fundamental axes of the extensive debate on soybeans at national and regional levels are raised. We then follow with a description of the dynamics of the main crops in the provincial territory through a quantitative methodological approach, examining causes and consequences. The results obtained indicate that soybeans in the province no longer reign alone, because there is a strong tendency towards convergence between the areas planted with soybean, corn and wheat. The sectorial policies of deregulation and liberalization implemented by the government led by Mauricio Macri during the first weeks of his mandate played a fundamental role in this process. However, despite the decline in soybeans, phenomena such as extractivism or accumulation by dispossession have strengthened.
