Abstract

MARSHALL, Adriana. Revisiting unionization in Argentina and its determinants: fissures in the traditional pattern?. Trab. soc. [online]. 2021, vol.22, n.37, pp.167-190.  Epub July 01, 2021. ISSN 1514-6871.

This article explores unionization in Argentina and its determinants from the mid-2000s up to the end of the next decade, to establish whether significant changes suggesting new patterns in formal wage earners´ behaviour regarding unionization took place or not. After examining the evolution in that period of certain crucial determinants of union density (employment structure, incentives fostering unionization, and social perceptions on trade unions),of the unionization rate, of the differential propensities to unionize, and of the distinctive union members´ profile, it is concluded that in all these aspects stability has prevailed over change. Although a few tenuous signs of fissures in the traditional patterns are apparent, it is premature to say whether these are just isolated, temporary episodes, or signs of new behavioural patterns which the 2020 pandemics´ shock might contribute to consolidate.

Keywords : unionization; trade unions; employment structure; trade union workplace representation.
