Abstract

MORRIS, María Belén. The “unit of action” between Argentinian central unions during Kirchnerism: weave and scopes. Trab. soc. [online]. 2021, vol.22, n.37, pp.221-243.  Epub July 01, 2021. ISSN 1514-6871.

The year 2012 witnessed a novelty in the field of Argentine union conflict: the Argentine trade union centrals shared a “unity of action” which implied the realization of five general strikes between 2012 and 2015. This article analyzes the layout of the "unity of action" between the trade union centrals that were opposition to the Kirchnerist government, and the tensions that were developed. This issue rests in a more general question about the underlying causes of the political action of trade union centrals. The methodology implemented in this study, from a qualitative perspective, involved the analysis of semi-structured interviews to union leaders, public union statements and systematic research of two national newspapers. In conclusion, we highlight that the “unity of action” was initially effective towards the dispute of economic, political and organizational power resources. However, its strength was limited by the double game between the political and the trade union arenas, and by the tactical and strategic differences between parties that gathered there, based on historical discussions at the organizational level.

Keywords : union conflicto; General Confederation of Labour; Argentine Workers’ Central Union; Kirchnerism.
