Abstract

SIMONETTI, Paula  and  CESTAU, Victoria. Scenes and scenarios of the pandemic. An approach to the situation of the artistic‐cultural sector in Montevideo. Trab. soc. [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.38, pp.125-140.  Epub Jan 01, 2022. ISSN 1514-6871.

This article analyzes the situation of the artistic-cultural sector in Montevideo during the Covid-19 pandemic, focusing on the performing arts. The characterization that we propose is based on interviews with sector referents, observations in collective and assembly instances, and press analysis. The artistic-cultural sector was one of the most affected by the health emergency, due to the early suspension of its activities, added to the scarcity and ineffectiveness of the measures adopted by the Uruguayan government to alleviate the impacts of the crisis. At the same time, the pandemic revealed the structural conditions of labor precariousness and informality experienced by cultural workers. In this situation, a series of collective initiatives of solidarity and mobilization by workers emerged. However, these associative instances had to face the challenge of fragmentation, patriarchal logics and certain self-precarious imaginaries that historically permeate artistic-cultural work.
