Abstract

MEDINA, Federico. Conditions of confinement of young people in the province of Santiago del Estero. A socioanthropological view from a youth trajectory. Trab. soc. [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.39, pp.41-56.  Epub July 01, 2022. ISSN 1514-6871.

Based on the adoption of a socio-anthropological approach, this article describes and analyzes different experiences of confinement of "young people in conflict with the criminal law" in the province of Santiago del Estero. To accomplish this task, the empirical reference is taken from the fieldwork conducted during the period covered by the doctoral investigation of which this article is an outcome, which took place between 2016 and 2018. This has required the use of different ethnographic research techniques, such as participant observation, nondirective interviews and ethnographic analysis of police reports with the aim to describe the experiences of young people confined in police stations - followed by a comparative analysis of the situation of young people arrested in a juvenile detention center. This goal is part of a broader aim that seeks to reach an understanding of the conditions of possibility, both social and institutional, that are the basis for the different experiences of confinement of young people "in conflict with the criminal law" within the province.
