Abstract

GONZALEZ KOFLER, Francisco. Memoirs: The marches of silence, the fall and the intervention. Santiago del Estero (2003-2004). Trab. soc. [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.39, pp.57-79.  Epub July 01, 2022. ISSN 1514-6871.

This work shifts between the field of studies about memory and a reconstruction of the immediate recent local history. Using ethnographic tools, we will focus on the memories that were produced in 2003-2004 in Santiago del Estero; in a conflictive context triggered by the crime perpretated against two young women who were found dead on February 6, 2003 in La Dársena. That crime led to strong protests against the government of Juarez (“Juarismo”) accusing it of protecting who were responsible for the crime. For more than a year, these memories battled in the provincial and national public space questioning the legitimacy of the Juarismo and resorting to the recent past to give significance to it. This process led to the first federal intervention in an Argentine province for “Human rights violations”. To account for this, we resort to on interpretive description of these memories and advance in a historical reconstruction of this immediately recent past, making use of at least ten years of fieldwork, interviews and archival analysis.

Keywords : Memories; ethnography; recent history; human rights; double crime of La Dársena; Juarismo.
