Abstract

DI BELLO, Mariana  and  ROMERO, Lucía. Institutional style and links with the environment. Precedents, context and management devices related to the territory at Universidad Nacional Arturo Jauretche (2002-2018). Trab. soc. [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.39, pp.219-236.  Epub July 01, 2022. ISSN 1514-6871.

In recent decades, in the field of academic production, in higher education policies and in the design of institutional management devices, new conceptualizations have been developed on the interactions of universities with other social spaces. Within this framework, this article analyzes a special type of social contribution made by universities to their environment based on a case study: the Universidad Nacional Arturo Jauretche (UNAJ), in Argentina. Based on an interpretive analysis of documents and interviews, this research sought to answer the following questions: Which elements shape the predominant style by which the UNAJ relates to its environment? To what extent were these elements present in the social and political process that led to the creation of the university?

The first part of the paper reconstructs the trajectory prior to the passing of the law for the creation of the UNAJ. The debates and policies related to the social role of the university that dominated the 2000s are identified and characterized. Then, the main traits that shape the relationship between the UNAJ and its environment are described and analyzed.

This research shows that members of the community of Florencio Varela (Buenos Aires) promoted the first debates about the creation of a university in the territory. But the university was carried out by other political forces in association with a particular political worldview. Finally, some tensions are pointed out as a result of an institutional design, articulated around an “commitment ethos” with the territory.
