Abstract

ABDULHADI, Augusto. Subnational politics in the face of soybean expansion. The case of Chaco. Trab. soc. [online]. 2023, vol.24, n.41, pp.245-262.  Epub July 01, 2023. ISSN 1514-6871.

Numerous studies show that in recent decades the agricultural frontier expanded outside the core zone in Argentina, especially in some provinces such as Chaco. This expansion was mainly due to the intense cultivation of soybean and, to a lesser extent, to livestock production. Given the federal character of Argentina and the evidence that shows the unequal distribution of resources of all kinds among provinces, this article inquires about the role of provincial politics in the face of this expansion of the agricultural frontier, given the significant degree of autonomy that each province has in Argentina's federal design. This paper is an advance of a broader research and presents the results of the documentary analysis carried out on the projects presented in the Chaco legislature between 2007 and 2022. Among the most important conclusions, it is highlighted that the deployment of soybeans in the provincial territory was supported by both dominant parties (PJ and UCR) and that the Federal Solidarity Fund had significant relevance.
