Abstract

FAVIERI, Francisco N.  and  ORELLANO, Verónica. Gender gaps in the labor market in Argentina. Before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic (2019-2021). Trab. soc. [online]. 2024, vol.25, n.42, pp.67-89.  Epub Jan 01, 2024. ISSN 1514-6871.

The COVID-19 pandemic produced changes in the main labor market indicators. In Argentina, activity and employment fell and unemployment grew, deepening the pre-existing heterogeneities. In this article we explore the inequalities between women and men in the labor market, based on their participation, representation, concentration and dissimilarity to measure horizontal segregation (in branches of activity) and vertical segregation (in occupational hierarchies). To do this, we work with the microdata base of the Permanent Household Survey (EPH-INDEC) between the years 2019-2021 in order to reflect its changes and persistence before, during and after the pandemic. Among the results we highlight that women do not manage to fully recover after the pandemic in their participation in the labor market, that horizontal and vertical segregation is maintained and extends towards the year of recovery (2021).

Keywords : gender gap; labor market; pandemic.
