Abstract

SALAS TONELLO, Pablo. Domestic and Inspired. Opportunities, restrictions and agency in the work of performing artists in a medium-size city. Trab. soc. [online]. 2024, vol.25, n.42, pp.179-198.  Epub Jan 01, 2024. ISSN 1514-6871.

In recent decades, social research has shown a growing interest in employment in the cultural and creative sector, focusing on artistic work in large cities with competitive and profitable labor markets. However, less attention has been paid to the work of artists living in medium sized, small or non-metropolitan cities. The aim of this article is to analyze the work of theatre artists in San Miguel de Tucumán, paying particular attention to the amount of time they dedicate to their work, their integration in the labor market and the role played by money. The study traces the difficulties and challenges faced by theatre workers, focusing on the gambles they make to grow their careers. Using some key concepts from pragmatic sociology, the article defines two ways of engaging in theatre work: either according to the domestic order or to the inspired order. In doing so, the article defines the work of theatre artists in a pluralistic way, offering a model that highlights the tensions between those who seek to position themselves further inside or further outside the field. The work is based on my doctoral research, where I conducted ethnographic observations and various in-depth interviews with different social actors of Tucumán's theatrical scene.

Keywords : work; theatre; performing artists; pragmatic sociology.
