Abstract

FERNANDEZ, Emiliano. The internationalization of the state: critic approach to its concept. Trab. soc. [online]. 2024, vol.25, n.42, pp.295-315.  Epub Jan 01, 2024. ISSN 1514-6871.

The aim of this article is to propose a critical approach to the concept of internationalization of the state. To do so, we start from the critique of the neo-Poulantzian approach to this concept, the most elaborated in Marxist critique. From the counterpoints with this approach, we reconsider he concept. We note that the basis of the internationalization of states is the contradiction between the global character of capitalist accumulation and the national character of those states. That it takes the form of a double interscalar movement of internalization and externalization of political guidelines between states. And that its content is the antagonism between capital and labour and inter-capitalist competition, mutually mediated with the inter-state dynamics of economic competition and cooperation (to attract/retain capital) and of geopolitical-territorial competition-cooperation in the world market and in the states system. Finally, we show that in the last five decades the internationalization of states has entered a new stage, marked by the geographic expansion of political (capitalist) guidelines towards areas that used to be distant from them and by the intensification of the inter-regional dynamics of internalization and externalization of these guidelines in areas where they were already present.
