Abstract
KUFFER, Claudio F; COLANTONIO, Sonia E and CELTON, Dora E. Características biodemográficas en la población del curato de Tulumba (córdoba) a fines del siglo XVIII y comienzos del XIX. Rev Arg Antrop Biol [online]. 2015, vol.17, n.2, pp.1-12. ISSN 1514-7991. http://dx.doi.org/10.17139/raab.2015.0017.02.08.
Tulumba parish has hardly been studied from a biodemographic viewpoint. However, previous research suggests a more marked tendency toward endogamous behavior than in other regions of Córdoba province during the late colonial period. The aim of this study has been to examine the end of the pre-independentist period through the censuses of 1778, 1795, and 1813 to identify the changes that took place, along with various determining factors that may have been involved. Data sources consisted of the above-mentioned censuses and baptismal records chronologically close to them, for both Spanish and mixed groups. The isonymy method and others derived from or related to it led to the discovery of trends towards marriage between relatives, among certain lineages, possible migration movements into the area, and the degree of reproductive isolation. The results indicate that during the first period there were no marriage preferences for relatives or family lines, but higher reproductive isolation. In the second stage, a significant proportion of marriages between relatives and among certain lineages was found, partly influenced by guidelines issued from the Crown as a strategy to preserve the patrimony while avoiding unequal marriages. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the prevailing tendency of the previous century was maintained regarding marriage among lineages and, as a result of migrations caused by the wars of Independence, the men/women migration ratio was most marked. In general, Spanish and mixed groups showed similar behavior. In conclusion, the results seemed consistent with the socio-political trends of the period under analysis.
