Abstract

PALERMO, Eduardo R.. Captives on the estates of Uruguayan-Brazilian's border. Mundo agr. [online]. 2008, vol.9, n.17, pp.00-00. ISSN 1515-5994.

The present article is an approximation to the working and legal situation of the afro-descendants, enslaved and freed, on the Uruguayan-Brazilian's border, on the second half of the XIXth century, specially related to their capture and kidnapping for selling as enslaved workmanship when slavery was about to be forsaken on Uruguay. Unlike the progressive slave-release on Montevideo and the Uruguay 's south, the persistency of servile workmanship, be it of slaves recognized as such or contracted labourers, a legal formula adopted to hide their condition of enslaved before the Uruguayan laws. This situation persisted till the end of the XIXth century on the estates on the north and east border of that country. With the end of the Atlantic's slavery traffic it was developed a very intense sub-regional traffic on those territories that met the demand of slave workmanship of the Pelotas salting places and coffee-agriculture of Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro . This traffic put in question the power of the Oriental State to enforce the law on the territory and demonstrated the dependency of Brazil during the period.

Keywords : Uruguay; Brazil; slave traffic; afro-descendants; workmanship.
