Abstract

CONESA, Marc. Rural servants according to different scales, agrarian structures and social changes: comparative analysis of two areas on Roussillion province in the modern era. Mundo agrar. [online]. 2017, vol.18, n.39, pp.00-00. ISSN 1515-5994.

This paper analyzes rural domesticity as observatory of social change and economic structures. Multiscale, the study is however centered on a territory located between France and Spain. Statistical surveys and private archives provides information on number of servants, their place in the household and their functions. Many dynamics (agrarian, demography, and family-system inheritance) are the main factors explaining the long-term changes in the social status of domestic servants. Linked to the concentration land properties in one hand, and the prolerarianization of the rural world on the other, these dynamics question theory of The Great Transformation
