Abstract

SAITUA, Iker. Ganadería y problemas de explotación de las tierras públicas en el Oeste norteamericano a finales del siglo XIX y comienzos del XX: el caso del estado de Nevada. Mundo agrar. [online]. 2021, vol.22, n.51, e175. ISSN 1515-5994.  http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.24215/15155994e175.

This article analyzes the process of concentration and grabbing of public lands in the American West, and especially in the state of Nevada in the late nineteenth century. Its purpose is to analyze the production strategy used by large livestock companies to finish with competition. It demonstrates how the possession of water sources created the opportunity for an exclusive use of the adjoining public pastures, thus trying to prevent the entry of competitors on these public lands.

Keywords : Ranching; Public lands; American West; Appropriation of natural resources; Water rights.
