The purpose of this paper is to analyze the transformations of local forms of community in Tumbaya (Jujuy, Argentina) derived from the institutionalization of tenant families of a large estate (latifundio) into a Kolla indigenous community. Through a qualitative analysis that combines ethnography and the study of local memories, I dissect the impact of the organization of families around the legal figure of the “indigenous community”, in a context marked by an incipient accumulation generated by the arrival of neoliberalism and the implementation of focalized social policies in the region in the late 1990s. I will show how the organization of tenant families as an indigenous community coincides, paradoxically, with the processes of disarticulation and family disunity.
