Abstract

DARI, Nora Liliana; QUIROZ, Silvia Susana  and  CERVINI, Rubén Alberto. Socioeconomic level and gap between educational attainment of the public and private sectors in Argentina. PISA 2018. Espac. blanco, Ser. indagaciones [online]. 2022, vol.32, n.2, pp.111-124.  Epub Dec 22, 2022. ISSN 1515-9485.  http://dx.doi.org/10.37177/unicen/eb32-335.

In Argentina, the best performance of private schools compared to public schools has been a repeated finding in learning evaluations. The studies aimed at determining whether such a gap is due exclusively to socioeconomic factors or whether a significant proportion is explained by institutional factors are divergent. The objective of this work is to provide knowledge about this dilemma with the PISA 2018 data. The mathematics and reading scores in the samples of the five geographic units included in the survey are analyzed with multilevel regression models. The indicators of “control” are parent education, goods at home, and their respective averages at school. The results indicate that the differences between both types of schools disappear when controlling for these indicators, in both disciplines and in all geographic regions. These results are compared with those obtained by other studies.
