Abstract

TIGRE ATIENZA, Wilson Xavier  and  VILCHEZ, Jose L.. Contextual variables and academic performance in university students in the Republic of Ecuador. Espac. blanco, Ser. indagaciones [online]. 2023, vol.33, n.1, pp.107-120.  Epub Feb 17, 2022. ISSN 1515-9485.  http://dx.doi.org/10.37177/unicen/eb33-345.

The literature relates abstract reasoning to academic performance (grades). In this sense, both variables are influenced by contextual factors that determine in a certain manner the levels that those variables can reach. By means of quasi-experimental analyzes, it can be checked if any of these contextual variables plays a relevant role to be taken into account in the pedagogy to be carried out. In this sense, neither the gender nor the rural or urban origin of the students seems to be a determining factor for the academic success in the Republic of Ecuador. The instruction of both parents does reveal itself as a predictive, motivating and influential factor for these variables; not only for the development of basic cognitive processes such as abstract Reasoning, but also for different indexes for academic performance.

Keywords : abstract Reasoning; academic performance; intelligence; cognitive processing; contextual factors.
