Abstract

QUARANTA, Nancy; VAROLI, Romina; CALIGARIS, Marta  and  CRISTOBAL, Adrián. Use of corncob as controlled porosity former in ceramics. Tecnol. cienc. [online]. 2023, n.46, pp.1-17.  Epub Feb 22, 2023. ISSN 1666-6933.  http://dx.doi.org/10.33414/rtyc.46.1-17.2023.

The objective of this work is to analyze the use of corncob as a pore-forming material in the manufacture of lightweight ceramic materials. The raw materials, corncob and clay, were exhaustively characterized. The ceramic products studied were manufactured from commercial clay with the addition of 5%, 10% and 15% by volume of corncob, and a sample without biomass added as a reference. All mixtures with 8% humidity were formed at 25MPa. Subsequently, they were sintered at 950°C for 3 hours. The results obtained reflect a high feasibility of using this biomass for the studied use. The obtained ceramic bricks have good general characteristics, with mechanical properties that meet the market requirements. In addition, it was observed that the obtained porosity is related to the size and shape of the particles of the used biomass, as well as the proportion of aggregates.

Keywords : corncob; residual biomass; lightweight ceramics.
