Abstract
MEYER, Lía Caren et al. Parallel compression strength in poplar glulam timber. Tecnol. cienc. [online]. 2023, n.47, pp.24-34. Epub May 08, 2023. ISSN 1666-6933. http://dx.doi.org/10.33414/rtyc.47.24-34.2023.
New technologies for the manufacture and industrialization of glulam timber structural elements make it possible to design large-span civil constructions capable of competing in terms of performance with the predominant steel structures. Given the orthotropic characteristics of wood, it is important to know the exact mechanical properties of the material in order to check the stresses that occur in each direction when a load is applied. In the case of compressive strength, the greatest capacity is manifested in the direction parallel to the grain (longitudinal direction). In this work, the strength and modulus of elasticity parallel to the grain in pieces of glulam timber Populus deltoides grown in the Paraná River delta are determined. Compression tests were performed on 90 specimens, in accordance with the requirements of IRAM 9663(2013). In Supplement 2 of CIRSOC 601(2016), reference values for this species are proposed in order to design timber structures safely and reliably. The values of resistance to compression parallel to grain obtained at the 5% percentile result higher than those published by Guillaumet et al (2017) in sawn timber, and comply with the GL24h resistant category of the European standard UNE-EN14080 (2017).
