Abstract

NIEVA, Sergio M.  and  ACENOLAZA, Guillermo F.. Stratigraphy and Ichnology of The Candelaria Formation (Furongian - Lower Ordovician) in its type area, La Candelaria Range, Salta Province. Ser. correl. geol. [online]. 2006, vol.21, n.1, pp.47-58. ISSN 1666-9479.

A detailed stratigraphical and paleontological analysis of the Candelaria Formation (Furongian- Lower Ordovician) is presented from the type locality at the Quebrada de Orcomato, Sierra de La Candelaria, Salta. The unit begins with a conglomerate with methamorphic and quartz clasts, that is followed upwards by the bioturbated reddish quatrzarenites that presents minor interbedded shales and fine sandstones. Ichnological material is represented by Monocraterion isp., Palaeophycus tubularis Hall, and Skolithos linearis Haldeman, common traces for mid- to high energy palaeonevironments as the ones represented by the Candelaria Formation. Correlation of this unit is also proposed in relation to the outcrops of the Sierra del Campo (Tucumán province) and the Cordillera Oriental of Jujuy and Salta. A palaeoenvironmental interpretation is done by means of the sedimentary characters and the trace fossil association of the Candelaria Formation.

Keywords : Stratigraphy; Ichnology; Candelaria Fm; Furongian-Lower Ordovician; NW Argentina.
