Abstract

VERGEL, María M; DURANGO DE CABRERA, Josefina  and  HERBST, Rafael. Brief history of the paleobotany and the palynology in the northwest Argentine. Ser. correl. geol. [online]. 2008, n.24, pp.267-279. ISSN 1666-9479.

This contribution provides an overview of the records of fossil plants and palinomorphs in northwest Argentina. The description and mention of fossil plants were scarce until the last decades of the last century, being limited to the widely known "stromatolites" (Pucalithus) of the Cretaceous, and a few silica trunks from the Upper Tertiary of the Valle de Santa Maria. There are also occasional mentions of fossil plants in diverse papers related to Devonian, Cretaceous and Cenozoic stratigraphy, but they were never studied. On the mid-'80s began a systematic exploration with publications of detailed descriptions of wood, leaves and fruits as well as a few Charophytes from the Neogene strata of the Valles Calchaquies. The publications related to palynology finding started in the 1970s, ,focused mainly in Lower and Upper Paleozoic sequences, with preliminary studies and reports from the oil companies. Beginning in the 1980s, a more conspicuous research on palinomorphs started , with a significant advance towards the knowledge of the palinoflora from northwest Argentina. Research were conducted mainly in the Ordovician, Carboniferous and Tertiary sequences. The current proposal also display the repositories of major collections of plants and palinomorphs.

Keywords : Palaeobotany; Palynology; Northwest Argentina.
