Abstract

GOMEZ, María José. STRATIGRAPHIC INSIGHTS ON THE LOS ESPEJOS FORMATION (SILURIAN) IN THE ANCHA CREEK, CENTRAL PRECORDILLERA, ARGENTINA.. Ser. correl. geol. [online]. 2016, vol.32, n.2, pp.1-10. ISSN 1666-9479.

A detailed stratigraphic description of upper part of the Los Espejos Formation which crops out in the Ancha ceek at the Talacasto range (Central Precordillera of San Juan) is carry out. Los Espejos Formation is coarsening upward and is composed of marine siliciclastic rocks, mainly sandstone with bioclastic accumulations and green siltstone beds. A stratigraphic sec-tion was surveyed in the upper part of the section where a coarse sandstone bed is recognized. This lithological character represents a change within this sedimentary succession which is near to the contact with the Talacasto Formation. This allows us interpreted the end of a sedimentary cycle in this part of the section and apparently coincide with regressive cycle in the late Silurian. There, shale beds are common and alternating with thin sands-tone and coquinas beds. These show a sedimentary deformation that affects the uppermost part of the section.
