Abstract

LAZARTE, José E.; HORTA, Luis R.  and  GARCIA, Matías F.. FARALLÓN BLANCO: VALUATION OF A GEOSITE AS HISTORICAL MINING HE-RITAGE OF THE U.N.T. Ser. correl. geol. [online]. 2022, vol.38, n.2, pp.11-20. ISSN 1666-9479.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5281/zenodo7738292.

The Farallon Blanco site is located on the eastern slope of the La Ramada mountain range, at northeastern Tucuman mountain ranges. The National University of Tucuman carried out two main tasks, as part of the mining exploration works, a shaft about 25 m deep and galleries for more than 250 m.The objective of these works was to explore a hydrothermal calcite vein up to 2.5 m thick. The veins are located in low-grade metasedimentites (phyllites, schists) with a complex structure. On this ba-sement, Cretaceous-Tertiary sedimentary rocks rest unconformably. During the 1950s and 1960s, a camp was set up in the Naranjito creeck, 100 m downstream from the shaft. Mining heritage value is attributed to these workings since they are the product of an unusual action for a national university of the time, which on its own account carries out the exploration of sites through an office specifically dedicated to mining. From the point of view of historical mining heritage, the works of Farallon Blanco constitute a LIPM (MHIP, mining heritage interest place) since it is the only important work carried out in the province of Tucuman at a time when the U.N.T. carried out an intense mining activity. The works present some stability problems. The proposed circuit would be of medium difficulty, with an access path from the town of La Cruz, which could be accessed with simple traction vehicles.
