Abstract

CAETANO MARTINS SILVA E DUTRA, Fabiana et al. Consequences of pemphigus in occupational performance and social participation of patients. Salud(i)ciencia [online]. 2018, vol.22, n.8, pp.727-733. ISSN 1667-8682.

Abstract Background: Pemphigus causes an impact on patients' quality of life, especially in relation to emotional aspects, pain and general health status. This impact can be generated by the side effects of the drugs, by the dermal characteristics of the disease, and by the stigma and prejudice associated with pemphigus. Objectives: To describe the socio-demographic profile, occupational performance and social participation of patients with pemphigus treated by an occupational therapy service of a philanthropic hospital, in Uberaba/MG. Materials and methods: Documentary, retrospective, exploratory, descriptive and quantitative research. The medical records with socio-demographic, occupational and life habits data were evaluated; occupational performance and social participation of 20 patients with pemphigus hospitalized between February 2013 and April 2015. Results: Patients were 37.7 years old on average. The majority were female, married, with incomplete elementary education and average income of R $ 620,50. In relation to life habits, 60% were sedentary, 65% non-smokers and 70% did not consume alcoholic beverages. Half came from Minas Gerais and 25% from São Paulo. Regarding type, 45% had pemphigus vulgaris and 45% pemphigus foliaceus, with an average of 62.5 days of hospitalization. In the functional evaluation, a limitation was observedin the following areas: performance at work, mobility outside the home, social interaction, personal hygiene and house care. All presented restrictions in social participation with degrees ranging from mild to large. Conclusion and study limitations: The descriptive design and the small sample may represent limitations, so generalizations to other populations should be made with caution. Pemphigus caused restrictions in occupational performance and a large percentage of restrictions in the social participation of this population.
