DANTAS, Roberto Oliveira. Videofluoroscopy in swallowing evaluation. Salud(i)Ciencia [online]. 2021, vol.24, n.7-8, pp.369-375.  Epub Dec 30, 2021. ISSN 1667-8682.  http://dx.doi.org/10.21840/siic/162345.

Videofluoroscopy (VFS) is considered the best resource for evaluation of swallowing disorders. Its introduction allowed a better understanding of the physiology of swallowing and the alterations consequent of diseases that cause dysphagia. Although the test is easy to perform, requires training and experience and adequate equipment. The main advantages of videofluoroscopy are: the results are subject to further analysis, objective measurement in computerized program and the possibility of immediate and accurate analysis of swallowing in different positions, bolus volumes, bolus consistencies and temperature. Among the disadvantages are: exposure to radiation, use of barium contrast, which may cause pulmonary inflammation, related to volume and concentration, and subjectivity in the analysis by the examiners. It is an essential examination in a hospital that investigate, diagnoses and treats patients with dysphagia.

Keywords : fluoroscopy; swallowing; dysphagia; deglutition disorders.
