Abstract

DE SOUZA MAIA, M.; MAIA, F.C.  and  PEREZ, M.A.. Soil seed banks. Agriscientia [online]. 2006, vol.23, n.1, pp.33-44. ISSN 1668-298X.

In plant communities, the soil seed bank (SSB) represents their regenerative potential. The replacement of individuals from the seed bank may have profound effects on the composition and patterns of the vegetation within the community. Many investigations about seed banks have been made within agricultural habitats or in natural communities. The attempt of this review about the seed banks in the soil is to analyze the concepts related to SSBs, their formation, the agricultural implications and how this information might be used for the conservation of the productive systems.

Keywords : Bank; Seeds; Soil; Longevity; Persistency.
