Abstract

CARRASCOSA, Joaquín  and  LESTON, Bárbara Estévez. Social bonds as access mechanism to employment of the working class: social class inequality and territorial mediatios. Astrolabio [online]. 2021, n.27, pp.219-248. ISSN 1668-7515.  http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.55441/1668.7515.n27.26914.

This paper proposes to analyze the differences between social classes in the use of access mechanisms of employment in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires according to different residential settings, focusing on the working class. We compare the City of Buenos Aires and the first ring of the Conurban Area and also the second and third ring. A distinction was made between access mechanisms of employment based on the mobilization of social bonds, strong or weak, linked to different institutions and socialization spaces like the family, the neighborhood, school, university, work, etc., and without the use of social bonds. We also analyzed patterns from an intragenerational perspective (previous occupations) and the link between the use of social bonds and access to formal or informal jobs. We used a quantitative methodology with data from the PI-Clases “Reproduction and Social Mobility in family trajectories and life courses” (2015-2016) survey that has a probabilistic sample and a unit of analysis of people from both sexes between 25 and 65 years old from the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires. Our main findings are the difference in the use of social ties between residential environments and the importance of the use of neighborhood bonds for the unskilled working class. Also, the use of social bonds (mainly neighborhood ones) is linked to the reproduction of the unskilled working class and access to informal jobs.
