Abstract

MARTINEZ, Ana Teresa. State, Economy and Politics in Santiago del Estero 1943-1949: Exploration of Some Structural Conditions of the Political Culture. Andes [online]. 2008, n.19, pp.67-92. ISSN 1668-8090.

In the context of a broader research on the evolution of the field of power in Santiago del Estero, in connection with the development and permanence of a political culture, this article explores the relationship between the early stages of local Peronism and the difficulties with the constitution of the provincial state as an area of relative autonomy which could arbitrate the interests arising from the interaction of the new political parties, as well as from those coming from the economic field. In the government led by Aristóbulo Mittelbach as well as in the conflict that defined the first nomination of Carlos Juárez, we can see the complexities of alliances that formed the rising Peronism. When  the timber obrajes dissapeared as the primary economic provincial power, no other factor of production followed. Thus, tax federal partnership had in that time -as it does today- a central importance into the provincial budget. Our paper shows the relations existing between these factors and concludes that there is an affinity between them and a particular way of taking part in politics.
