Abstract

QUINTIAN, Juan Ignacio. Political Articulation and Ethnogenesis in the Calchaqui Valley: The Pulares in the 17th and 18th Centurias. Andes [online]. 2008, n.19, pp.299-325. ISSN 1668-8090.

This article proposes a critical revision of the documentation about the formation process of the Calchaquí frontier where the Pulares developed strategies of adaptation and resistance that allowed them to accommodate to the colonial regime in advantageous conditions. In the 18th century the Pulares appealed to colonial justice as a strategy to control their lands. This strategy allowed some of their villages to survive within the colonial system.

Keywords : Frontier; Indian Villages; Ethnogenesis; Persistence; Adaptative Strategies.
