Abstract

MARTINEZ ZUCCARDI, Soledad. An intellectual group in Tucumán (Argentina) at the beginning of the 20th Century: About Revista de Letras y Ciencias Sociales (1904-1907) and its producers. Andes [online]. 2010, vol.21, n.2, pp.223-259. ISSN 1668-8090.

As well as a vehicle of aesthetic, scientific or ideological projects, cultural reviews promote the constitution of groups of intellectuals and writers. This article studies the features of the group that produced Revista de Letras y Ciencias Sociales (Tucumán, 1904-1907). The founders of the group were the Bolivian modernist poet Ricardo Jaimes Freyre, Juan B. Terán y Julio López Mañán, being the latter two lawyers born in Tucumán. Other local figures contributed to the project, such as José Ignacio Aráoz, Alberto Rougés, Juan Heller, Miguel Lillo, Germán García Hamilton, Abraham Maciel and Ubaldo Benci. The article examines the intellectual profiles and careers of each of the figures mentioned above -especially those of the founders- and the characteristics of the group, taking into account aspects such as social origin, relationships with the province's cultural institutions and with political power, the place the group devoted to culture (with particular reference to the fields of literature and history), and the nature of the bonds within it (whether they were intellectual, familiar, or of friendship). The analysis shows, on the one hand, that the group was firmly related to the local elite sectors, the political power and the cultural institutions, and, on the other hand, that it exhibited an awareness about culture which does not seem to have been developed before in Tucumán in such a decided and systematic way. Revista de Letras y Ciencias Sociales is perhaps the initial crystallization of that cultural concern, as well as the first public manifestation of the group. Some of its members would later create an institution of great significance in the intellectual life of the province and of the North of Argentina: the University of Tucumán.
