Abstract

BENCLOWICZ, José Daniel. Contributions to the History of Northern Salta: Formation and Development of the Towns of Tartagal and General Mosconi in The First Half of the Twentieth Century. Andes [online]. 2011, vol.22, n.1. ISSN 1668-8090.

This work analyses the conformation and development of Tartagal and General Mosconi during the first half of the XXth century. Tartagal emerged as a result of the expansion of the Argentine border and the expropriation of land belonging to indigenous peoples. The abundance of forest and oil resources and the forced work of those peoples prompted the fast occupation and the economic growth of the area, that became the scene of bitter disputes between the Standard Oil Company and YPF. In spite that the economic growth made Tartagal and Mosconi important wealth producers in the province, their social development was very limited.

Keywords : Tartagal and Mosconi; Economic development; Standard Oil and YPF; Indigenous peoples; Forced work.
