Abstract

FEELY, Anabel  and  RATTO, Norma. Calculation of the minimum number of vessels and surface collection: methodological criteria and case analysis of western tinogasta (Catamarca). Andes [online]. 2013, vol.24, n.2, pp.00-00. ISSN 1668-8090.

This work is of methodological nature and its objective is to present an analytical procedure for the construction of the unit called minimum number of vessels and for field sampling of areas with great amount ceramic material. The articulation of both types of procedure permits to obtain reliable information at an interpretive level, and also diminishes the volume of collected material. We illustrate, through case studies of western Tinogasta, the interpretative mistakes that can be caused by the use of frequencies of fragments in the analysis of the ceramic samples; we also point out the unnecessary amount of material that may be collected from surface, when having no criteria of sample selection.

Keywords : Ceramic material quantification; Sherd frequency; Minimum number of vessels; Surface sampling; Sample selection.
