Abstract

TOBENA, Verónica. Disputes over the past in Argentina: The challenge of professional historians to best-sellers of history. Andes [online]. 2016, vol.27, n.1, pp.00-00. ISSN 1668-8090.

The article analyzes the terms of the challenge posed by professional historians to the work of historical popularizers at the end of the 2001 crisis in Argentina. It considers this dispute like the particular way in which the historical canon was discussed in Argentine historiography. Before considering the description and analysis of such criticism, the paper considers the emergency context of history bestsellers that caused controversy, mentions the set of books that were part of the publishing trend in these years, closely linked to the crisis that Argentina was going through, and identifies which books and authors of that literature called "of the crisis", constitute "controversial books and authors". Finally, after developing in detail the objections that professional historians posed to popularizers of history, the text provides the differences at epistemological, methodological, rhetorical, political-ideological, format, and media levels, and the instances or criteria that function as sources of legitimacy are identified in the various historiographical conceptions implied by this dispute.

Keywords : Argentine history; Historiographical canon; Professional history; Historiographical best sellers; Disputes over the past.
