Abstract

WAHREN, Cecilia. Sounds of the native: The reconfiguration of indianness in the invention of bolivian folk music. Andes [online]. 2017, vol.28, n.1, pp.00-00. ISSN 1668-8090.

During the first decades of the twentieth century, the nineteenth-century criteria that disqualified indigenous musical expressions began to be questioned by various composers. Looking for the definition of a national folklore, they made from those a central element of reflection and artistic creation. In this article we will study the theoretical essays and musical pieces made by three composers who were part of that trend: Antonio González Bravo, Eduardo Caba and Teófilo Vargas. The deployment of their works is part of a process of redefinition of Indianness from different discursivities and cultural policies. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how these musical productions helped to shape social identities in Bolivia in the early twentieth century. In this sense, we will observe how the attempts to set and define a musical folklore involved a redefinition of Indianness.
