Abstract

CASTRO OLANETA, Isabel. The Salta encomiendas : Governance of  Tucuman, XVIIth century. Andes [online]. 2018, vol.29, n.2, pp.00-00. ISSN 1668-8090.

In first place, the article proposes to organize and systematize information that comes from different sources for reconstructing of the universe of the encomiendas and indigenous peoples in the jurisdiction of the city of San Felipe de Lerma, in the Salta Valley, throughout the seventeenth century. It considers a varied documentary corpus that includes: the Visit of Luján de Vargas, the Confirmation Files of encomiendas sent to the Council of the Indies, census registers and lawsuits for encomiendas .The second objective is to present the historicization of the locations and transfers of the indigenous peoples and encomiendas, proposing that in Salta they were settled in two spaces near the city: Pulares and Guachipas, where there exist several indigenous villages adjoining each other, whose inhabitants were entrusted to different neighbors. Finally, it analyzes the visit of Luján de Vargas to show how the groups having lands in indigenous villages, in macro-reducciones, in most cases divided their residence between their town and the private lands of their encomenderos attending in their farms and ranches, sometimes, more or less definitively, and other times, seasonally. The paper proposes as hypothesis that at the end of the seventeenth century there was a tendency by which, the encomienda Indians were residing less in the reducciones and more time in the lands of their encomendero, but without totally abandoning the former.
