Abstract

GARCIA, Marisol. Looking for the native voices in the colonial justice: the authorities of Malfines and Andalgalas and their communitary reproduction (La Rioja, 1674-1693). Andes [online]. 2018, vol.29, n.2, pp.00-00. ISSN 1668-8090.

This article focuses on the Malfin and Andalgala’s encomienda, located in La Rioja in lands named Guaco. From 1674 to 1693, a trial was held for the lands where the indigenous population was settled. In this, ethnic authorities of the encomienda become actively involved pursuing different purposes: Francisco Gualcusa, mandón, obtains a Real Provision to settle in Andalgalá, Catamarca, while Gerónimo Pibala and Pedro Aballay, caciques, ask to remain in Guaco, La Rioja. The aim of this paper is to examine the dispute between them; showing the heterogeneity of positions within an indigenous encomienda. I will focus on the speeches and arguments they use to obtain favorable results, as well as the assumptions underlying them. The article analyses three subjects that structured the debate among the authorities. They can be valuable to study other cases from a comparative point of view: the place claimed to be native from, thematerial and social reproduction of the population, and the legitimacy that support leaderships.

Keywords : Colonial La Rioja; Ethnic authorities; Court documents; Indigenous Agency; Speeches.
