Abstract

SICA, Gabriela. "... Neither they made any complaint against their encomendero..."tribute, mita and indigenous work in indian peoples of Jujuy: Political contexts and regional differences. 17 th century. Andes [online]. 2018, vol.29, n.2, pp.00-00. ISSN 1668-8090.

This paper will analyze the way in which -in the jurisdiction of San Salvador de Jujuy -the need for labor slowly contributed to restrict the coercive power of the encomenderos and the permanence of personal service as a tributary relationship. The competition for access to indigenous labor can be analyzed through many different conflicts, over the organization, compliance and distribution of the mita de plaza, in the different ways of pressure against the encomenderos and in the search foralternative mechanisms to find workers. In this process not only the Cabildo, encomenderos, caciques and communities, but also neighborswithout encomiendas, miners, and foreign Indians would have been involved. Withinthis general view, there exist some regional differences.

Keywords : Personal service; Indigenous labor; Mita de p.
